I am apparently a bit more positive to Kancheli's 3rd than both other reveiwers. One makes reference to Haydn's Surprise, and the same comparison popped into my mind while listening. Kancheli has many more "surprises, though, and they are not meant to be funny. Instead, they are jarring, but I like the effect. The other notable part of the work is the countertenor, singing something to the effect of "aaaaaah, aaaaaah, aaah." This may not be my favorite modern symphony, but it is an interesting enough work. But be careful about turning up your stereo during the quiet moments.

I prefer Part's choral music, but I like the symphony and Fratres, two somewhat similar orchestral pieces.

Part's Third Symphony is a masterpiece of power and beauty, building and releasing tension through its own structure, yet free of any conventional "development." This version, especially the first movement, sounds too slow and contains many inexplicable pauses, breaking the continuity and rendering the piece difficult to follow. The feeling of forward momentum, of buildup and release of which Part is a master, is lost. A much more coherent reading may be heard on the  Naxos version  with Takuo Yuasa and the Ulster Orchestra.

Not having heard any other versions of Kancheli's Third Symphony, I can't compare this one to any others. The extreme dynamic variations probably come off better in live performance. Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony employs sudden bursts of sound for humor; here they seem gratuitous -- as the liner notes say, an exploitation of the dynamic range possible with compact disk.

Agrippa's Dog
5.0 out of 5 stars Franz Welser-Möst/London Philharmonic Review
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 5, 2018
Franz Welser-Möst's recording of the third symphonies by Arvo Pärt and Giya Kancheli is superb. I bought it for the Arvo, and feel that this is one of the best recordings of his Third, almost on a part with the two accounts by the great Neeme Järvi (on BIS and DG). Fratres, for orchestra and percussion, is likewise comparable to the Chandos Jarvi recording. I don't know enough about Kancheli's work to say how this account of his Third rates, but it sounds very good to my ear, and features former Hilliard Ensemble countertenor David James (enough of a reason to buy it). I can only hope that Franz Welser-Möst records more Pärt. He clearly is in sympatico with the great Estonian.
